What To Do in an Emergency

The GTN System's pipelines primarily traverse

areas of low development and serve large customers,

such as power plants, industrial facilities and local

distribution companies. If you encounter an emergency situation along the GTN System's pipeline route,

please call (800) 447-8066 immediately.

The following is more likely to relate to your local gas distribution company's system, which consists of smaller pipelines bringing

natural gas to residences and businesses. For more details, look for the safety information on your local natural gas provider's website.

In Case of Fire
If you encounter a fire that seems to be fueled by a gas pipeline leak:
  • Do not try to extinguish the fire.
  • Do not use water on the burning gas at the point of the fire.
  • Spray water on nearby building or other combustible material to help prevent the fire from spreading.
In Case of Gas Inside a Building
If you detect escaping gas inside a building:
  • Leave the area.
  • Do not attempt to locate gas leaks.
  • Do not remain in a building or area where there is a strong gas odor.
  • Do not turn lights on or off or unplug electrical appliances when there is a strong gas odor.
  • Do not use telephones in the area of a strong gas odor.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Do not position or operate vehicles and powered equipment where leaking gas may be present.
After taking the necessary precautions mentioned above, call your local fire department from a phone outside the affected area.
